The Samsung Galaxy s4 is old news! Sure it is a great phone, but now all eyes are firmly looking at the newer, bigger, and better Samsung Galaxy s5. On February 24, 2014, the CEO and Vice Chairman, Dr. Oh-Hyun Kwon, officially announced the newest and arguably the greatest smartphone in technology: the Samsung Galaxy s5. Presented at the Media World Conference (MWC), the multi-billion dollar hardware company told press and developers that the new Galaxy would be available globally on April 11, 2014. The pre-orders started on March 24, 2014, with 5,000 orders in the first several hours of listing it on the website. As one can see, the Galaxy seemed to be very popular with it is buyers and it seems to now be offering some new and fantastic unique features.
Have you ever finished a challenging exercise routine in the gym and wanted to measure your heart rate? Or, have you ever suddenly dropped your phone in a pool of water only to discover your brand new 700 dollar (without a two year contract) iPhone 5s is now just washed away from a simple prank? Amazingly, now with the all new Samsung Galaxy s5 users can do just that! One may ask how is a phone capable of determining one's heart rate and able to protect itself from becoming waterlogged; however, with the brand new dust and water-resistant features Samsung stated, “You can dunk the handset into water for as long as 30 minutes and it won’t protest one bit”. In addition, with the heart rate monitor technology built into an individual’s phone, users will never really have to guess about their heart rate anymore. These are only a few of the distinct features customers will benefit from if purchasing the new Galaxy s5.
Samsung offers a variety of unique features that make this phone one of the best on the market. It also offers a new 16 megapixel camera which includes a three-time faster autofocus. The autoshoot is great for outdoor shots or anyone who doesn’t want to lug around a larger camera. According to the well-known technology reviewers at CNET, “The new Galaxy s5 will be running Android 4.4 KitKat (operating system) and has all the same functions as Android’s original operating system. It also carries over Galaxy S4 elements like the expandable quick access settings in the notification tray. [With a] KitKat [operating system one can] swipe right in the app tray for list of programs and widgets.”
With all these great applications, one can’t help but think are all these features really necessary? Our knowledgeable Android users, Mr. DiCristo (who is our go to, never-fail Internet Safety and technology teacher) and Mr. Ryan Stauss (who is a corporate electrical engineer for a luxury car brand), both love the new features Samsung is offering to its customers. Mr. Stauss states, “[...] I think it [such features] is necessary, but I bet it hurts Samsung a little bit. If you make a bullet proof device you can’t sell a customer a second phone when they have [a] minor accident [...]. Customers may not be inclined to purchase another one if all of their needs are met with the s5. Samsung would have to create an unbelievable match to the Galaxy s5 to get users to purchase a new model.
Even though the Galaxy s5 might be considered “bullet proof,” there are still some features that are called into question. The body of the phone is not traditional metal. Instead, it has a plastic body and Samsung is not offering another body option. We asked Mr. DiCristo about the phone not having a metal body and he stated, “[The Galaxy s5] is made with plastic, but it is not some cheap plastic you would buy at Walmart when buying a plastic bowl.” Despite the fact that the s5 does not have a metal body, it may not affect its performance or durability.
We asked Mr. DiCristo, who is currently running on an HTC One phone made by HTC (High-Tech Computer Corporation), and Mr. Ryan Stauss, who is currently using a Samsung Galaxy s3 made by Samsung, if they would switch to a Samsung Galaxy s5 from their current phone. Mr. DiCristo stated, “It is tempting because of the waterproof feature, but to switch from an HTC One I would miss my front-facing speakers, but if my HTC One breaks today, my next phone would be the Nexus 5 (a phone made by Google) because it is the best for your buck”. Mr. Stauss indicated he would switch only if “coming from an s3 to an s5”, however, he would probably not switch “from an S4 to S5. There is no jump in RAM for any upgrader, but the processing speed is worth it. When it comes down to opening a video, starting the camera, cutting videos or mp3s, the S5 will run circles around all the other models!”
So as one can see, it is very tempting to switch from all current phones, but is it the right move for you? At this point, it is really the preference of each user whether he/she will upgrade or not. Regardless of some individuals’ apprehensions to switch to the new phone, we feel it is worth switching from one’s current carrier of Verizon to T-Mobile just to get the s5. In fact, if one desires the Samsung Galaxy s5, Verizon is now offering a buy one get one free deal. Buyers also have a choice of the new HTC One (M8) or the Samsung ATIC SE with a two year contract. By taking advantage of this offer buyers will also get a $50 mail in rebate gift card. Regardless of what one decides to do, it is obvious that Samsung has arguably become the current leader in producing global technology communicative resources. PHOTOS BELOW !!!!
